Choosing your wedding cake
Size
A standard 6″ + 8″ + 10″ round wedding cake will give you around 70 portions or 110 if the bottom tier is a traditional fruit cake. A square cake would give around 100 portions or 150 if the bottom tier is fruit.
Additional portions can be provided by adding a fourth tier however a more cost effective way is to have an undecorated ‘cutting cake’. These cakes could even be in different flavours if you want to give your guests a choice. A 10” square gives around 50 additional portions whilst a traditional rich fruit cake gives around 64 portions.
Colour
White or bridal ivory are the traditional colours but sugarpaste can be made in any colour to complement your colour scheme
Lustre dusts are a very popular and stunning way of incorporating a satin like finish on one or more tiers of your cake. From a subtle pastel blush to a deep show-stopping rose gold we are happy to advise you and show samples of what can be achieved.
Textured finishes
We can achieve beautiful effects on your cake with ruffles, floral wraps and stencils. Have a look at our wedding cake page for some examples of where we have incorporated these techniques.
Flavour
The traditional choice of rich fruit cake yields twice as many portions as a sponge cake. Because it keeps well it is ideal for more elaborate cakes where it would be difficult to complete all the decoration at the last minute. It also allows the top tier to be kept for a christening cake!
There is no reason why you cannot have different flavours for different tiers. Have a look at Our Flavours – whilst these are our most popular just let us know if you have something different in mind and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Display options
Your venue should be able to provide a wedding cake stand free of charge but if you are looking for something in particular we are happy to arrange this for you. We have a small selection of cake stands for hire include white pedestal, wooden log and a multi-tiered cupcake stand. The hire price will include assembly and collection from the venue the next day.
Tiered cakes can be stacked or extra height can be added by using a wide variety of pillars and items such as candlesticks and perspex cubes to separate the tiers. Cake stands can also be hired to display each tier separately to give the cake a floating appearance. We are happy to advise you on the various options.
